It takes three years to turn a manure pile into a source of gold for the garden. This was the third year for the first pile and earlier this spring I spread and mixed the whole pile into the garden.
It was so worth it! I could not be happier with the fruit and vegetables and flowers that grew this year.
The tomatoes are ripening.
Spaghetti squash is huge.
Peas are on their second picking.
Oregano is doing so well I have let some of it flower.
I will be eating corn before long.
Time to make pickles, I can’t keep up with the cucumbers.
A handful of strawberries every day.
The poppies are taller and bigger than they have ever been.
Cosmos and more poppies.
First time ever I have been picking bouquets of sweet peas.
Hollyhocks…in memory of my first dog, Holly.
Petunias that are actually flourishing and not struggling to stay alive.
What I haven’t shown you is the potatoes, broccoli, beans, carrots, beets, cabbage, swiss chard, and herbs. I have probably forgotten to mention something.
It is such a pleasure to see the plants grow and produce. Such a pleasure to enjoy the freshness of the vegetables and the beauty of the flowers.
Each year now I will have another pile to add to the garden and flower beds.
Thank you to the cows and sheep and chickens for producing the “gold” that goes into the soil.
